The Wild were in the midst of a three-game losing streak at the time that the Coyotes sent a fourth-line line to Minnesota to take on the Wild in the second round.
That third line, led by former Wild captain Nick Foligno, did not go as planned.
The Wild went on to lose that game 3-1.
“We were pretty well set up on that fourth line when that fourth-liner got the game-tying goal,” Wild forward Kyle Brodziak said.
“We kind of let the third line kind of go on its own, and we didn’t really play well on that line.
That line is good, but they’re not great.”
The fourth line has been a strength of the Wild.
Minnesota’s third line has played well, posting a point in each of their past three games.
“It’s a lot better this year.
They’re playing really well, and that’s the difference, because of the third-line,” Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk said.
Dubnyk is 4-2-1 with a 1.85 goals-against average and .920 save percentage this season.
He’s won five of six and is 0-1-1 in his past three starts.
The first game was a blowout win in Minnesota, but Dubnyck said he’s felt good since then.
“I’ve felt pretty good.
I feel like I’m doing a lot of good things with my body and my legs, and I feel confident,” Dubnyak said Tuesday.
“I feel good with the way I’m skating, and there’s been a lot more consistency.
That’s what you want from your goaltender, and right now, I’m pretty happy with where I’m at.”
Foligno scored the first goal for the Wild after the Coyotes were 3-0.
It was his first goal since Jan. 29, 2016, and tied a career high.
“He’s a very good skater, he’s a good skaters in front of the net, and he’s good defensively,” Dubcyk said of Foligna.
“He’s been playing pretty good all year long.
I’ve always liked him.
I think he’s got a good shot.
I like his shot, too.
I thought he did a good job of getting into the net tonight.”
The Wild have outscored opponents 5-1 since Nov. 1, when the Wild were without forwards Mikko Koivu and Mikael Granlund, who both missed the game with injuries.
Koivuso has two goals and six assists in six games.
Granlund is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks with a lower-body injury.
The Wild are 6-4-1 when scoring first and are 6/3-3 when losing their first four.
Dubnyks goal in the first period gave them a 2-0 lead, but Arizona won the ensuing faceoff and took control of the game.
The Coyotes were unable to score in the third period.
The goal came on a breakaway and a two-on-one that was called back because of a blocked shot.
It’s been the Wild’s longest power play of the season, but it’s still 1-for-8.
Wild center Ryan Suter had an assist on the goal and two assists in five games.
Wild captain Mikko Rantanen has a goal and three assists in four games.
Rantanens three-point performance in Minnesota is tied for second on the team.
The 27-year-old Rantaniemi has three points (two goals, two assists) in four career games against Minnesota.
The 23-year old Rantans career high for points is five.
